jewels-2One of Downs Solicitors major fundraising activities for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity has been to participate in CowParade Surrey, the largest outdoor art exhibition ever seen in Surrey. Because Downs has three office locations – Dorking, Cobham and Godalming, they purchased three of the life-sized fibre glass cows and commissioned three very talented local artists to add their own artistic flourish to each of the bovine beauties but with the brief to follow a specific theme.  As 2016 sees The Queen celebrating her 90th birthday and as Prince William is Patron of the Royal Marsden, the Royal theme seemed perfect.

Each of their udderly beautiful “girls” has been named by their respective creators:   Emintrude, who can currently be found grazing in St Martin’s Walk in Dorking.  Jewels, who  is strutting her stuff in Angel Court, Godalming and Queenie who is munching away in Holly Hedge Road, Cobham.   Ermintrude even has her own twitter account!

ermintrude-headErmintrude is the creation of Jill Flower, whilst Jewels was brought to life by Ruth Wheeler.   Queenie was conceived by Susan Meers and the R C Sherriff Trust Elders Project.  The Project group consists of 16 men and women ranging in age from 70 up to 95..

Chris Millar, Senior Partner at Downs, said “When the opportunity to get involved in CowParade Surrey came along, we didn’t take much persuading that this is a really fun, colourful and unique way for us to be able to promote the firm but more importantly to raise funds for our nominated charity of the year – the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.  It is also a great way to bring visitors into our towns to showcase the diverse range of businesses on offer and the stunning countryside that we enjoy every day.”

CowParade (originally called “Land in Sicht” (roughly translated as “Countryside in View”) was the brainchild of artistic director, Walter Knapp and started out in Zurich in 1998. Since then it has been held in over 50 cities around the world, including udderly fabulous destinations such as London, Milan and Buenos Aires.

cow-2Tim Metson, CowParade Surrey leader comments: “We are delighted to welcome Downs Solicitors to the Parade and excited to release their herd out into Surrey. CowParade Surrey is an exciting opportunity to shine a light on our beautiful County, raise lots of money for local charities and have fun cow spotting over the summer months!”.

“CowParade Surrey is such a wonderful fundraising concept and we are delighted that our corporate partners Downs Solicitors have purchased three cows to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. It is thanks to the support of companies like Downs Solicitors that The Royal Marsden can continue to provide the very latest cancer diagnosis, treatment and care for our patients” said Joanne Bell of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

There will be over 60 cows dotted around Surrey until the end of August. Make sure to download the free app from www.cowparadesurreyhills.com to discover where they are, virtually collect them & WIN prizes.
