Paint Guidance from Brewers

The surface of each cow is primed by the manufacturer. Unless you have altered the pose or exterior of your cow, you will not need to reapply a primer if your cow is to be entirely covered in your painted design.

If a background colour is required, or the cow will not be entirely covered in your design, we recommend Zinsser Bull’s Eye Primer. This can be tinted to aid opacity in both light and dark colours.

Acrylic paint, artificial resin paint or two-component paint can be used to paint the cows.

For intricate patterns, Sharpies (permanent markers) or Liquitex paint markers can be used.

We recommend to start on a small unseen area first to check the materials you have chosen and to get used to working on a hard shiny surface.

Three coats of varnish is required using a hard gloss varnish. This step is critical to the ultimate durability of your cow, and cows which are returned unvarnished or which are incorrectly varnished may not be exhibited.

We can recommend three thin coats of Rustins Quick Drying WB Exterior Varnish 2.5 litre. This is water based and gives a non yellowing, satin finish. It is touch dry in 30 minutes and re-coatable in 4 hours. Equipment can be cleaned with water.
